This is all very well, but in my experience contacts are the most important thing in getting articles published - especially in the nationals. Also a good knowledge of the publication/website you're pitching too. Editors hate it, I've found, if you pitch to them and you haven't researched - or perhaps even ever seen - a copy of their publication! Sorry if this sounds like teaching grandma to suck eggs!

Eric,

I love you articles and templates but I would like to offer some food for thought.

It' my opinion that yes we need to include a call to action in our articles, I don't believe that it has to be for an opt in or to buy something.

I think that the more we do this, the more ineffective it becomes. It's kind of like attending a webinar for a launch. You can count on the first 40 to 45 minutes being great info but the last part will be pitch.

Now I'm sure there are many out there like me, who grab the info and bounce. Sorry, but true. Now if I keep my audience guessing as to what I'm going to do, I become less predictable and as a result, more effective.

Not all articles need to have a call to action in my opinion. Well not a call to action as most may think. Isn't asking for comments and feedback a call to action?

My point is to be creative and not predictable. Stand out from the crowd and your business will grow.

Some great strategies for Thought Leadership identified by Eric and here's another one to add to your list.

Ask your contacts what they are thinking. Analyze their responses and use this to help create and reinforce your leadership thoughts.

A carefully designed and professionally implemented online survey can generate the information that you need to further enhance your thought leadership profile.
Good luck.

There is no such thing as too much conversation but this is a function of who I am rather that a third party opinion. There exists all kinds of people and those that complain of too much conversation in social media are more likely critics that actual unbiased evaluators. People who think there is too much does not resonale with those of us who think there is no such thing. As far as the aspect of marketing using this method goes, that is fine, too. One will not attract all the people and that is ok because being too accommodating also has its drawbacks. Thank you for starting this discussion.

Awesome article Eric and packed with great tips and advice. It really is all about getting out there and engaging. Nothing happens over night, but then nothing happens if you don't take action.

I never saw Linkedin as a viable social platform. Then October last year I joined a group. From there I got hooked on Linkedin, below to 7 groups and have made countless connections and built tremendous business alliances. Oh and also established many new clients. I will be happy to share this information to my fans, followers and clients.

I agree with Caol...it shouldn't be the speed by which we get found but by whom! By the end of the day it's all about finding the right, targeted audience. I think we all do this whole article marketing to get targeted traffic, but the more people read it the bigger the chance that it'll get infront of someone who is a potential client. Let's not forget about our article going viral.......good content will go a long way. That's why spinning doesn't really work. It has to be authentic, original and real.
