Article Writing Secret: How to Keep Your Articles Focused on Your Readers
By Eric Gruber, Your Article Marketing Expert | March 7, 2008
Before you even think about writing your articles, you must get to know your customers better. Do this by creating a composite sketch that embodies everything your customers think, feel and care about your industry.
Here’s how I created a composite sketch of my karate school’s adult class…
How to Get to Know Your Customers Better So You Can Write Better, Faster!
Step 1: List Your Audience’s hot buttons
After interviewing the adult class I discovered that our adult students are looking for a fun, exciting way to keep physically fit, relieve stress and learn vital self-defense techniques that will save their lives. To our surprise, not one student mentioned to get a black belt.
Using these hot buttons, my instructor can create articles like:
- How to keep physically fit for years to come
- 3 simple martial arts secrets that will help you relieve stress quickly
- How martial arts training will save your life
Step 2. List all the emotions your audience has in regards to those hot buttons
For example, before my karate class became students at Chirico’s School of Karate, the students were:
- Tired 0f the same, old gym routine
- Frustrated that they did not have the confidence to stand up for themselves or their families
- Angry as they had no means of eliminating stresses from work and their daily lives
Once they became students they felt:
- Confident as they regained flexibility, increased stamina and improved overall health quickly with an exciting, new workout and routine every single class
- Engaged in a total-body workout adaptable to any age
- Fulfilled as they improve their concentration, self-discipline and attitude so they can perform better at work and live life to the fullest
- Protected as they have learned techniques that will defend themselves and their families from a variety of attacks and real-life street situations
- Happier, now that they have found a way to relieve their stress instead of taking it out on their loved ones.
Once you get in tune with these emotions, you will be able to get into their minds, affect their emotions and write copy that persuades and motivates your readers.
Step 3: List the top 10 questions your audience asks you on a daily basis
For example, when potential new adult students enter the school they ask my instructor:
- There are so many karate schools around, why should I attend your class? This question can lead to an article or special report entitled “How to Choose a Karate School.” For an example, check out my special report “How to Choose an Article Submission Service” at www.IWantMoreProspects.com/10questions
- Will your martial arts style best suit my needs and wants? This can lead to an article ‘How to know if your martial arts style suits you”
- What will I learn? This question can lead to an article titled: “Top 10 Things You Will Learn in a True Martial Arts Class”
- How will I benefit from martial arts training? You can write an article on “Top 10 Ways (Parents, Teens, Children, Seniors, Fathers, Mothers) Will Benefit from Martial Arts Training”
- Will the martial arts improve my work performance? You can write an article titled “How to improve your work performance in 30 days with martial arts training.”
- I am not athletic at all, is the martial arts for me? You can write an article “How martial arts is for you — even if you are clumsy, non-coordinated and never did martial arts before”
- What are some self defense techniques that I will learn? You can write an article on “3 Self Defense Techniques That Will Save Your Life.”
- The doctor says I need more cardio-aerobic exercises, how will the martial arts fulfill that need? You can write an article on “Why Martial Arts Training is the BEST Form of Cardio-Aerobic Exercise”
- How hard and how much do I have to train to get the most out of martial arts? This leads to an article “How Hard & How Much Do I have to Train to Benefit from the Martial Arts”
- What do I have to do to reach black belt? You can do an article on “How to Get Your Black Belt in the Martial Arts”
When you’re looking for story ideas, these 10 questions will always provide brilliant inspiration.
Step 4: Flip through your industry magazines and tear out a picture of someone who looks like one of your customers.
Yes, it’s unconventional. And, yes it works. Whenever you write articles for your website, blog, newsletter or submission and you get stuck on a certain phrase or just don’t know how to explain a concept, look at the picture. Then, explain that concept in plain terms to that customer and watch your writer’s block melt away fast.
Follow these techniques and I guarantee your copy will be tight, to the point and focused on your #1 resource: your customers.
